Women's Volleyball World: 18 Teams Secure 2027 World Cup Spots and Signs of Change

There was a moment in Tianjin, when the Thai women's volleyball team defeated China in the final of the 2026 Asian Championship, that I suddenly remembered my early days in women's volleyball. Back then, I thought major tournaments were only for powerhouses. But watching the Thai girls cry and hug on the court, I understood that women's volleyball is changing. And today, as all continental championships have concluded, we know the first 18 teams to qualify for the 2027 Women's Volleyball World Cup. These are not just names, but stories. The first questions I was once afraid of are now the stories I tell the young players.

The 2027 FIVB Women's Volleyball World Cup will be held in Canada and the United States. This is the first time the tournament will feature 32 teams, an unprecedented expansion from 24 in previous editions. Defending world champions Italy, along with hosts Canada and the USA, have automatically qualified. The remaining 29 spots are allocated through continental championships, with three per confederation. As of now, all continental championships have ended, and we know 15 teams that have secured their spots via this route, bringing the total to 18. Both teams reached the semifinals, along with World Cup hosts Canada and the USA (already qualified). Cuba and the Dominican Republic finished third and fourth respectively, while Puerto Rico, in fifth place, also qualified thanks to the spot for non-qualified teams. This is Puerto Rico's third consecutive World Cup appearance, a remarkable achievement for a small nation. Cuba, with its long volleyball tradition, is gradually returning after a period of decline. The Dominican Republic, with powerful hitters like Brayelin Martínez, remains a formidable force. Puerto Rico, without standout stars, has relied on collective play and team spirit to overcome many opponents. Women's volleyball doesn't need saving, just someone willing to sit down and listen. Small teams like Puerto Rico deserve more recognition.

AVC – Thailand makes history, China and Japan remain strong

This is a brilliant milestone for Thai women's volleyball, a country where the sport is beloved. Both teams, along with Japan, who won the bronze medal match, qualified for the World Cup. China, despite the loss, remains a force to be reckoned with, boasting a talented young squad. Japan, with their technical and fast-paced style, is always a tough opponent. Thailand's rise shows that Asian women's volleyball is becoming increasingly competitive. This was also Thailand's first Asian championship, a historic mark. CAVB – Africa awakens

In Nairobi, Kenya, the 2026 African Championship saw Egypt crowned champions after defeating hosts Kenya in the final. Cameroon, who won bronze, also qualified. This is the second consecutive appearance for Kenya and Cameroon, while Egypt returns after years of absence. This disparity reflects the reality of resources and competitiveness. But don't jump to conclusions. Women's volleyball is changing. Thailand won Asia, Kenya reached the African final, Colombia made the South American semifinals. Teams once seen as "also-rans" are gradually asserting themselves. And with the expansion to 32 teams, the 2027 World Cup promises to be a fairer playing field for all. Notably, the expansion not only increases opportunities for weaker teams but also creates more exciting group-stage matches, helping women's volleyball reach more fans worldwide. However, some argue that expansion could dilute the quality of the tournament. But looking at what the smaller teams have shown, I believe this expansion is necessary for the comprehensive development of women's volleyball.

When I was a young reporter, I thought tournaments like this were only for the powerhouses. But looking at the list of 18 teams, I see a more diverse picture. From the trembling microphone of 2026 to today's analysis, I still believe every small team deserves a voice. The media wave will pass. The children who see themselves in it will not.
