Vietnam U23 at ASIAD 2026: A Roster Defined by Absence

In mid-July, with ASIAD 2026 less than two months away, the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) finalized a 23-man U23 squad for the Asian Games. On the surface, it is a simple roster: 3 goalkeepers, 7 defenders, 9 midfielders and 4 forwards. But for those who have followed Vietnamese youth football for a long time, the roster reads like a map: some roads are opening while others have been deliberately closed. Most people read a squad list to see who has been called up; I read it to see who has been left out. This time, the absences are too large to ignore. The context gives the list its weight. Vietnam U23 just won a bronze medal at the 2026 AFC U23 Asian Championship. The senior national team just won the ASEAN Cup. In the same cycle, two levels of Vietnamese football reached real milestones. When a country is riding that kind of wave, fans naturally expect more. ASIAD, held in Japan, becomes the next target in the public imagination. Yet the coaching staff chose a different route. There are two kinds of absences. The first is strategic. Nguyen Dinh Bac, Tran Trung Kien and Nhat Minh are not in the ASIAD squad because they are being kept for the senior national team. They are not injured; they are not out of form; they are simply considered more valuable for other priorities. All three were part of the ASEAN Cup-winning generation. This is not a rejection. It is a ranking of priorities. The second absence is medical. Nguyen Hieu Minh, Nguyen Thai Son, Bui Vi Hao and Khua Van Khang are out with ligament injuries. In football language, ligament injuries are never small. They need time, and protecting young players from further damage is a clear medical message. This group contributed significantly to the U23 Asian bronze medal, meaning the ASIAD squad is not simply a smaller version of the team that succeeded in Asia. What does the remaining squad say? First, the structure of 3-7-9-4 shows an emphasis on midfield. Nine midfielders allow head coach Dinh Hong Vinh to switch between formations and control transitions. But a squad list is only a still image. It does not show pressing patterns, build-up play or how the team reacts under pressure. Without match data, any tactical conclusion is only a guess. Four forwards is also thin for a long tournament. If injuries or suspensions hit, the attack will be tested. The depth is in midfield, which may signal a desire for control rather than direct attacking pressure. But that is a structural guess, not a confirmed game model. The squad includes players from Hanoi FC, SLNA, Cong An TP. Ho Chi Minh, CAND, Hai Phong, Quy Nhon United, Hue, Ninh Binh and The Cong. Vietnamese youth football is spreading across many academies. That is good. But short preparation time means chemistry will be difficult to build. Players from many different clubs need matches together to understand each other. Talent alone will not solve that. Vietnam is working on two tracks. One is the senior national team, protecting players who have already proven themselves. The other is the U23 and ASIAD track, giving younger players international exposure. These tracks are not enemies. If managed well, ASIAD can become a launchpad for the next generation. Based on my experience following Vietnamese youth teams over many tournaments, young players develop only when they face stronger opponents. ASIAD is exactly that kind of stage. Even without the bronze-medal stars, the tournament in Japan is bigger than any Southeast Asian youth event. If a 19-year-old scores against Japan, South Korea or Uzbekistan, he will gain confidence that no friendly match can provide. Still, we must be careful not to romanticize the story of a next generation too early. Missing stars do not automatically create a cohesive team. At previous Asian Games, many Southeast Asian youth squads arrived with exciting young players and then collapsed because they lacked international experience. Japan, South Korea and Uzbekistan have squad depth that most Southeast Asian teams cannot match. A 9-midfielder roster may work, or it may simply reveal a lack of quality forwards. Opportunity only exists when the players standing in front of it are ready. The real measure of success for Vietnam U23 at ASIAD 2026 should not be a medal. It should be the number of players who, after this tournament, can compete for starting places in V-League and later earn senior national team call-ups. Coach Dinh Hong Vinh is not asked to rebuild the exact bronze-medal squad. He is asked to find the people who will carry Vietnamese football forward. For me, the 23-man squad is not a verdict. It is a promise: Vietnamese football will not stand still. The absence of key players is a test. It will show whether the youth system can create new names or is only living on past success. I have always believed that goals are remembered, but the people behind the goals are more important. At ASIAD 2026, watch the least famous players in the squad. They are facing an opportunity that many bronze-medal players never had. Every summer has people waiting to be called. The only question is whether they dare to step out of the shadows of those who stayed home. ASIAD 2026 will give us the answer.
